What If I Need It? The Biggest Question in Decluttering

You got this sign to inspire the decluttering process.

When guiding someone through the decluttering process, I often face the common challenge of addressing the "What If I Need It?" question. This often stems from a fear of letting go and can deter individuals from reaching their ultimate goal of creating a clutter-free and organized space.

One approach I recommend to my clients is this: If the item costs less than $25, and you do end up needing it again, you can repurchase it. This mindset allows clients to feel less pressure to keep items “just in case.” Of course, if you have the space for it and know you’ll need it, by all means, keep it! Decluttering doesn’t mean letting go of everything. It’s about making intentional choices and keeping what you truly love or need.

As a Professional Organizer, my goal isn’t to strip away your possessions. It’s to create a system that works for you. If you have the space and love an item, use it seasonally, or know when you’ll need it next, it’s perfectly okay to keep it. The key is ensuring it’s easy to find when you do need it. Too often, I see clients lose track of items in their clutter, leading to unnecessary repurchases. My goal is to ensure you know where all your things are, so you save time, money, and stress.

We also live in a consumer-driven society where companies continually release new products and social media influencers constantly promote the latest trends. This cycle can lead to homes filled with items that are rarely or never used. Holding onto items simply for the sake of keeping them often creates clutter and, eventually, overwhelm.

To combat this, I encourage my clients to adopt a mindful approach to acquiring new items.

For example:

  • Add items to your cart and wait 24 hours before purchasing. If you still feel you need or want the item, go ahead. If not, remove it from the cart.

  • Implement a “One In, Two Out” rule: For every new item brought into your home, let go of two. For instance, if you buy one new sweatshirt, donate two that you don’t wear. This practice helps maintain balance and prevents excess accumulation.

Managing possessions can feel overwhelming, but less truly is more. With fewer items, you have less to manage, clean, and organize, freeing up your time and energy for what matters most.

I approach the decluttering process with empathy and trust, understanding that each possession holds unique value and significance. I respect my clients’ decisions about what to keep or let go. To address the biggest decluttering challenge—'What If I Need It?'—I guide my clients by asking thoughtful, targeted questions like:

When Was the Last Time You Used It? I encourage reflection on the item's practicality by asking when it was last used. Items that haven't been used in months or years may no longer serve a purpose in the person's life.

Do You Have a Specific Plan or Purpose for It? Consider whether you have a specific future use or need for the item. If not, it may be more beneficial to let go and create space for items with immediate relevance.

Does It Align With Your Current Lifestyle or Goals? Evaluate whether the item aligns with your current lifestyle, interests, or goals. Items that no longer fit into your life narrative may be candidates for letting go.

How Many Similar Items Do You Have? Take time to think about duplicates or excess items of that similar item that you own. Keeping only what is necessary or brings joy can help streamline possessions.

Does It Hold Significant Sentimental Value? Consider whether the sentimental value outweighs the need to keep it. There are many alternative ways to preserve memories, such as photographs or keepsake boxes.

Can Someone Else Benefit From It More? Consider whether someone else could benefit more from the item through donation or gifting. Decluttering is an open opportunity to positively impact others.

What Would Happen if You Didn't Have It? Envision your life without the item and explore the potential consequences. This exercise can help you assess the true necessity or importance of the item.

Would you buy this item again?

Evaluate whether an item still holds value or purpose in your life. If the answer is no, it’s a clear sign that it may be time to let go of it and free up space for things that truly serve you.

Decluttering isn’t just about getting rid of things. It’s about creating a life filled with what you truly love and use. It’s about designing a space where everything has a place and is easy to find, making your home a source of peace rather than stress. Together, we can make those hard decisions and create a simpler, more intentional life for you.

When you let go of things that no longer serve you, you're not only letting go physically but you're freeing up mental space, too.

The fear of "What If I Need It?" often keeps us holding onto items that no longer serve us. But the truth is, most of the time, we don’t miss what we let go of. By focusing on what truly adds value to our lives today, we can create a home that feels lighter, more organized, and less overwhelming. Remember, you’re making space not just for things, but for peace of mind, clarity, and room to grow.

Let go with confidence, knowing that you’re clearing the path for a simpler, more fulfilling life.
